Why do people act so shocked when a tragedy the likes of yesterday’s Virginia Tech massacre occurs? Is it, perhaps, because they cling to the unrealistic notion that their personal world is a safe place? How naive and foolish is that? The sad truth is that this bizarre behavior was noted by several on campus, but our porous and incompetent system, once again, failed our children.
Everything didn’t suddenly shift because of 9-11. That was not some monumental defining moment in the sordid history of humanity. Sorry. It was just another bloody event in the long line of atrocities perpetrated by those who would kill to make a point as compared to those who would only send a nasty note.
Here is your face of evil behind the heinous act committed in Norris Hall, Monday morning:
Cho Seung-hui . . . baby-faced killer
There is very little that is civilized about this alleged civilization, as opposed to any culture’s previous attempts at empire. Our leaders and authority figures are mindless idiots and the people are mindless sheep; sheeple. Most people want to be safely cocooned in a utopian fantasy world a la Disney where everything is clean and bright, and the only pain is in the queue line wait for “It’s a Small but Violently Fucked Up World.”
Gun control advocates are screaming, now, ready to rip all weapons from the hands of even law-abiding citizens. Please. That mentality will only allow criminals or fascist government officials to remain armed. I was raised in Appalachia and learned to shoot and hunt at an early age. Gun safety was paramount. In the military, I earned my marksmanship ribbons. I’ve owned guns, knives and bows all my life. I’ve yet to kill or harm anyone with any of these and, frankly, if I wanted to kill you, I wouldn’t need them.
The only thing required to kill another human is the will to do so.
The first question I ask, regarding the Virginia Tech butchery, is why did authorities – both law enforcement and school officials – not lockdown the campus, immediately, following the first shooting at 7:15 AM in West Ambler Johnston Hall? When a murder has occurred and the killer is at large, you do not assume that they have left campus, whether you have any evidence at all to suggest it. If the killers are not in custody, then lock it up and hunt them down.
Don’t assume when lives are at stake. Whoever made that decision is responsible for the extent of the bloodbath in the second shooting at Norris Hall. Heads should roll. School and law enforcement officials should be held accountable for this atrocity, once the timeline is traced back to those who failed to do their jobs. I am tired of hearing adults utter the phrase “No one could have known” with regard to every abomination that befalls the dazed and confused lambs being led to slaughter.
Bullshit! I know and I’m telling you that the sheep better wake up and hold accountable the morons in charge of this country – at all levels of local, state and federal government – and demand answers, justice and hard proof that the correct actions and security measures have been taken to ensure a repeat incident is not possible.
Stop the billions flowing from our pockets to other countries and build the proper security infrastructure, here, needed to protect our own citizens, first. Period. Hell, exclamation point!
I will never give up my right to defend myself or bear arms, no matter what laws you enact. Until you prove to me via actions and many years of statistics that humans have totally evolved into a peaceful, respectful and compassionate species, then I am keeping my weapons of choice. My brain is my main weapon, so don’t think you can convince me to go soft and roll over, allowing others to protect me. That is absurd and would be truly laughable, if not for the carnage displayed, yesterday.
While my heart goes out to all those who suffered loss, pain and fear during and because of the Virginia Tech slaughter, I am not even going to blink when I say that I refuse to relinquish the 2nd Amendment Right to Bear Arms. Get your best legal minds together, huddle with society’s preeminent scholars, philosophers and religious pacifists and at the end of the discussion, whether you vote to repeal it and the rest of the Bill of Rights or not, I’ll still keep my interpretation of the 2nd Amendment, which gives me the right to bear arms.
My study of history and humanity is my guide. Humans are ignorant, naive, lazy, fearful and prone to moments of great evil when left to their own devices. Democracy is a sham and the collective minds bargaining for a New World Order “frighten” me the most. So, no thanks, but I’ll not be voting for repeal of the 2nd Amendment. This country has already given up too many freedoms due to the fearmongering whines of federal government, these past eight years.
Now, get real and practical and I’ll listen, cooperate and help you implement some well-thought strategies for securing our nation. For instance:
- Stop the Iraq War and put that money towards internal security.
- Secure our airports, seaports and borders.
- All incoming passengers and cargo should be checked.
- Train all citizens, including children, in first aid, trauma and self-defense techniques.
- Those properly profiled, psychologically, could legally carry concealed weapons.
- Metal detectors and armed guards would be in place wherever large groups of people gather.
- Those who illegally sell or use guns should be punished harshly.
Those are only bandaids on the many issues of security in this country, but they do not even begin to address the real, underlying causes of these seemingly random and raging acts of insanity, which wreak havoc, pain and suffering. This society needs to look at its collectively deep-rooted fears, psychoses and mindset regarding repressed sexuality, racism, violence, imperialism and blatant disrespect for each other and the rest of the world. This is a very sick society.
Raising children to believe in the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, their own personal Jesus or any other fictitious entity that is going to protect them from all harm is bullshit. Teach children how to handle a real world, please. Give them proper instruction on first aid, understanding when to flee or fight and whether they should be offensive or defensive in given situations. Reading, writing and arithmetic will only take you so far in this world, especially when you expect it to always remain civil. It will not.
Should we go through the jungle and remove all the big cats’ claws and fangs, because one of them developed a taste for human flesh? Should we simply slaughter every cat we see, having profiled all cats as being potentially deranged and unpredictable? What if we just put up a wall around the jungle and never let the children play there? Extremist solutions to combat extremist threats will lead to extreme chaos.
Our society glorifies violence. It is in all media: our TV shows, movies, news footage, books, toys and our games – whether it’s BB guns, football or Grand Theft Auto. This is not wise, especially when some minds are weak, fearful and think they must express themselves violently. I do not propose that we eliminate all media, football or video/computer games. I do suggest that everyone pay close attention to their world and those who are playing in it, and give greater care to whether children should be allowed access.
I grew up shooting every caliber weapon imaginable, plus using a bow. My military training furthered that experience. In my adult life, I’ve used weapons and I could write an entire book on just that, providing my own psychological profile. Some of my favorite computer games have me killing CGI Nazis by the hundreds. I understand the difference between a game and reality, and whether it is appropriate to act out in certain fashions.
Should you be concerned about me? I say no, but if I were psychotic, then what good is my word? Study my life, my actions and whatever mistakes I’ve made, then tell me if I can be trusted with a weapon. Any human can turn violent under certain circumstances. By that, alone, even I should be watched.
Guns do not kill people. People kill people. However, easy access to guns is not appropriate, either. Elimination of all guns just to make some people feel safer is not the answer. That’s living in a fantasy world and you truly don’t understand history, human nature or how to best protect human life when you preach such nonsense.
The most frightening Weapon of Mass Destruction is a sick human mind.
During the course of events leading up to yesterday’s sad catastrophe in Blacksburg, VA, all those who: were ignorant of the warning signs, refused or were afraid to intervene and failed to contact the proper authorities at the first hints of depression, suicidal tendencies or any abnormal and antagonistic behavior towards others – makes them an accessory to the actions of this loon who decided to take out his pain and misplaced frustration on his fellow students, before taking his own life.
Students need to wake up and watch their classmates, closely. The school officials and local law enforcement agencies need to alter their failed policies. Parents need to be teaching their children the harsh realities of surviving in this chaotic world.
This bloody incident was foreseeable and preventable. Those who knew about the gunman’s depression, disturbed creative writing and sociopathic behavior prior to Monday, April 16, 2007, failed your children. Where have you failed by assuming that these and others like them will always watch out for your precious babies? Stop living in a dream world and wake up, then teach your children well.
The Kat
